Only a few hours
Before the baby was born, I always wished I had more time. I couldn't publish more because I didn't have enough time. I couldn't read all the books I bought because I had no time. I felt like I was hopping from one task to another, hoping to find some peace and finally settle into a focused state of mind.
Now that we have a baby, I can really say it's difficult to find a chunk of time to focus on writing or any other creative project. I wake up at 5:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays for yoga and around 6:30 on other days. The baby, of course, requires constant attention. My wife and I almost always take the baby outside in the afternoon for a walk or a visit to a coffee shop. I'm in charge of preparing lunch and dinner. Even when the baby takes a nap, there's cat litter to clean, trash to take out, and food to prepare.
The only time I can really focus on writing starts at 7:30 at night, when the baby goes to sleep. This is when my wife and I sit down to work on our company. We know we're supposed to get the most work done during these hours. We know it's time to check off at least three boxes on our to-do lists. This is also when I start writing for my blog.
Before the baby came into our lives, I had plenty of time to think about what to write for my next post. Now I don't allow myself more than a few minutes to think before I start typing whatever comes to mind. I don't worry as much about whether what I write really matters, either to me or to the world. I just want to use these precious few hours for something I find most rewarding. For me, that's writing a blog post, publishing a podcast episode, or preparing for my online reading group.
